Original vs. Remake: Wizard of Oz vs. The Wiz
On May 17, 1900... one of the most beloved and celebrated children's novels was published. This novel was The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum. This book captured the imagination of children and adults worldwide... and according to some sources, the book is an allegory about the populist movement, but that's beside the point. This novel has been adapted to the big screen multiple times. Today, we are only going to look at the two most famous adaptations. The first adaptation we will be looking at is, of course, the 1939 musical The Wizard of Oz directed by Victor Fleming. This movie was a critical and financial hit being nominated for six Academy Awards including Best Picture. It won the awards for Best Original Score, Best Song (Somewhere Over the Rainbow) and an honorary Academy Juvenile Award for Judy Garland. The other film I will be talking about is 1978's The Wiz, which is based off of the 1974 Broadway musical of the same name. It was made by Motown Productions. Unlike
